Wire Gage: bigger is smaller

Wire or cable conductor size is specified as AWG (or just "G" or "g"). AWG stands for American Wire Gage (or Gauge).

A bigger number indicates a smaller diameter. Telephone wire used indoors is typically 24 AWG. Years ago, thicker wire was used.

Household electrical wiring is typically 12 or 14 AWG.
